In my opinion martial arts is a great fun way to get into shape. The whole family can participate and learn together in a structured atmosphere. I think it depends a lot on the school you attend as to how much fun it can be. Some of the schools I have seen are very traditional and strict which I think has its place but I prefer to be in and teach a lighter environment class. Push the students to excel and have a smile on their face … thats what I like to teach.
Take the martial arts style of Taekwondo for instance.
The objective of the martial art Taekwondo game is to out kick an adversary for points or until the last of the event when the sentences will pick the victor of the match based on points or the more aggressive attacker in the match if the score is tied. Unlike a martial arts tournament of old, the athletes in a martial arts match today will typically wear some defensive gear, such as mouth guards, head gear, chest protector, elbow, shin and a groin protector. This is to ensure that the athletes in the match do not experience damage from their explosive strong kicks in the ring.
Training for all the kick and variations is a very good work out and to watch it you would think that its not that big a deal until you are actually out there throwing one of the big muscle groups in your body around. Then you get a real idea of the strength and stamina it takes to go 3 – 2 to 3 min. rounds.
Kickboxing started in Europe and America as an option to traditional martial arts and is often thought of with mixed martial arts. Although not technically considered one of the martial arts, many of the participants who enter the game have skills in martial arts and were often among the best participants in their chosen martial art. Many professional boxers also get into the sport of martial arts, after a trainer has shown them how to kick properly.
Although not nearly as diverse in kicks, kickboxing incorporates boxing which adds to the upper body work out. In our school we use this to music at an aerobic level and is a blast to do.
I am sure that other martial arts have similar training styles and are very good for getting you in shape and having fun in the process. As I stated earlier choose your school well some are much more suited for family and others for a more ridden style. It is all up to your preference.
As you can see martial arts is a great way to not only get into shape but fitness all around can be made fun and enjoyable for the whole family.
